With the client's permission, Susan may use a Japanese folk art technique called "gua sha" to enhance the treatment. Often used by acupuncturists and practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this technique can help to alleviate muscle pain and tightness. Using a porcelain tool (most often a miso soup spoon!), the practitioner rubs it's edge over the client's skin with a repetitive motion. As this is done on different areas of the skin (usually just on the back), red marks appear and will remain in the places where there are Trigger Points, tight muscles or unhealthy tissue - almost like a magic pen! The technique is supposed to bring stagnated blood to the surface so that new blood can rush in. It is great for clearing out toxins in injured muscles and it's also supposed to get rid of bad Qi or energy. But be warned: while most people think gua sha feels good, it looks horrible. The red marks can stick around and change colors for up to a week, so don't let Susan do this if you're headed to the beach soon or want to show off your new backless dress over the weekend!

Thai Massage/Shiatsu Combo

This relaxing yet incredibly energizing type of massage is done on a floor mat with the client wearing loose, comfortable clothing. This type of work involves a series of yoga-style stretches and rhythmic pressure-point work using the therapist's palms, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet. Susan combines her knowledge of Shiatsu with a natural affinity for the dance-like flow of Thai Massage to create a unique bodywork experience. The intention behind this work is "metta", which is the Buddhist practice of loving kindness and a philosophy that has always been vital to Susan's work as a Massage Therapist.

Mat/Table Combo

This session is simply a combination of Thai/Shiatsu work on the mat and Therapeutic or Relaxation Massage on the table. Susan designs these sessions according to the client's specific needs; she usually begins with stretching/range of motion techniques on the mat and continues with targeted Deep Tissue work on the table. Great for clients who need to address specific issues such as lower back pain, tight hips and legs, or an inflexible spine.

Reiki

Literally translated as "Universal Energy", Reiki is a gentle healing technique that involves a laying on of hands to induce a restful, meditative state in both client and practitioner. In a Reiki-only session, the client lays fully clothed on the massage table while the practitioner places her hands on specific areas of the body. The practitioner is effectively channeling the life force energy that flows through all living beings in order to balance the chakras, (the body's seven main energy centers,) and help return the body/mind/spirit to its natural perfect state. Susan often practices Reiki during massage sessions when she senses that the client could benefit from this modality.
